Optiflies leverages advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning to revolutionize insect farming. By optimizing rearing conditions, breeding processes and resource management, we aim to make insect protein a scalable, sustainable cornerstone of the global food system. Working under the Eurostar Project Collaboration, we are realising an advanced analytics cloud platform with our partners, within a European Cloud Platform.

Challenge
The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) is a promising alternative protein source, converting organic side streams from the food sector, into feed and fertilizers. However, scaling production in Europe faces challenges, leading to inefficiencies that limit market adoption. BSF farming requires precise control over feedstock, density and environmental conditions; therefore, advanced data analysis tools are needed for optimization. Supported by the EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategy, this innovation enhances sustainability by boosting process efficiency by 15%. Optimization will ensure profitability, secure future growth, and foster confidence for large-scale investments in sustainable protein production and circular agriculture.
Our solution
Lynxx will develop a dynamic, multi-purpose cloud platform which supports advanced analytics, machine learning and client-feedback models. By training models on different datasets and integrating them into federative models, we can leverage industry wide knowledge without sharing sensitive business data. Therefore, we can help industry leaders to quickly find ways to improve – or determine their USP’s where they excel. Our solution provides clients with a hands-on tool to explore their own data and allows us to find complex relationships and patterns within the data of their production processes. In turn, this enables us to optimize production parameters within the varying conditions in the production facilities. We have set up a modern lakehouse solution, based on a stack of open-source software (OSS). With Apache Iceberg and the fantastic OSS Lakekeeper as foundation, we created a highly scalable, performant, and resilient data ecosystem. Decoupling compute from storage allows the platform to deliver lightning-fast query execution across massive datasets, all while enforcing fine-grained access security. The open-source nature of our stack allows us to deploy this in a multitude of cloud service providers (as well as on-premises), avoiding vendor lock-in. For OptiFlies, we chose to host our service on T-Cloud Public (formerly called Open Telekom Cloud), marking this our first big step towards supporting a sovereign European digital landscape.

Results
We have already built a production-level cloud platform on an European Cloud provider, providing advanced data analytics to our current customers. With these advanced analytics, they gain insights into all of their data and extract more value from their datasets than ever before. The next step will be to identify the complex relationships with the help of Machine Learning Algorithms.
